Tao Tea Leaf Rice Shou Pu-erh

I just love the little mini-cakes that pu-er occasionally comes in.  They’re just cute.  An adorable little pellet of yumminess.

This is a lovely, lovely tea.  The creamy rice flavor blends with the warm masculinity of the pu-er to make a dark blend that is rich with complexity and vigor yet smooth and tasty.   Along with the rice flavor, it has the typical leathery, woody and earthy notes of a pu-er, but blended together smoothly.   Others found citrus flavors, but I’m not tasting those.  And, like many pu-ers, it’s great for multiple re-steeps.  I’m on steep three currently… or is it four… of my current set of leaves.  And the sweet and creamy rice flavor lasts and lasts.  Other literature notes people getting up to 9 steeps.   I would not be surprised to get rice notes to the end.

This is really great pu-er.  I recommend it to anyone.

TeaFrog Caramel Cream

The scent from the sample is strongly woody.

I measured out 1 tsp and got a large caramel cube!

5 minute infusion; WOW!!! The creaminess of the caramel is coming through and (thankfully) leaving the woodiness of the rooibos behind. It tastes just like a caramel chew. This has turned out to my favorite rooibos blend from Tea Frog. This tea is yummy and definitely going on my list of night time tea selections.

Vendor Suggested Preparation: 2 tsp per cup (200ml); water temperature 90 degC (194 degF): infuse 2-3 mins

Canton Tea Co. Anxi Rou Gui

Utilising one of my larger gaiwans and about a tablespoon of this tea, I rinsed the tea and got right down to the first infusion of 30 seconds.

First impressions:
Smells a bit fruity, a bit sweet, yet mellow and slightly grassy at the same time.
The liquor is very clear and bright.
The taste is a bit darker and more woody than I expected from the smell. Also, I noted the taste to be a bit more watery than expected Perhaps more than 30 seconds are necessary for the second infusion.

Continuing impressions:
The 45 seconds I gave the second infusion brought about a darker hue, perhaps not as bright, yet still clear.
It definitely improved the flavour.
Over the next three or so infusions I put these leaves through, this tea never grew very strong, but sipping it truly was a delight. The aftertaste of this tea is stronger than expected, composed of floral and fruity notes.

Overall, a thoroughly pleasant oolong that I would definitely recommend. On my personal scale, I give it an 85/100.

Dry appearance: leaves are large and coal black in color, smell is sweet like honey (hence the name)

Boiling water and 3:30 minute infusion yields a champagne colored tea. This is hard to believe that this is an unflavored black tea! The taste is more of oolong than black. The meatiness of an oolong comes to mind as I silently sip this delicate tea. This reminds me of my very first oolong…plum oolong to be exact. A woody flavor profile that lingers on your palette long after the tea has disappeared from your cup.

This tea does not need sweeteners added. The honey presence makes this perfect. I personally I am not detecting the orchid, which is fine by me. Flowers and tea is not always a tasty combination.

Overall, this tea is good. A second infusion is expected with this one since the leaves have not fully unfurled from the first infusion. If you are looking for a robust black tea, keep looking. Honey Orchid is a light tea with a dual personality: black or oolong? I will let you decide, that is if you are lucky enough or thoughtful enough to have joined the Single Leaf Club. If not, then you will just have to take my word that this is one impressive bloolackong tea!

Sanctuary T Chocolate Honeybush

As my husband handed me the box from Mike, I could smell this tea! And I have to admit my comment was “something really smells in there!” The fear in the back of my mind was Rooibos. Had I requested another Rooibos? The fear was subsided when I opened the box to reveal this silver tin of Honeybush tea. I have only had honeybush tea once before and on that particular occasion the honeybush strongly resembled a woody rooibos.

Honeybush is a mild, caffeine free herbal tea. I was hopeful that I would like this tea. As I put my teaspoon into the tea leaves, I noticed something…what is that? Chocolate? Yes, tiny chocolate pieces of goodness throughout this blend. Since I could not locate any brewing directions I just went with standard recommendations 4-5 minutes steep time with 1.5 tsp per cup.

Chocolate. Did I mention the chocolate??? This is very good chocolate tea! Smooth and rich. One cup will do ya kind of tea. And the best part is that it is caffeine free, so this may well become my nighttime tea. Halleluiah. It is really hard to find a good nighttime tea. I would never have pegged a honeybush to fill that need in my tea cupboard, but this jewel of a tea did just that for me. Go ahead and pick up a tin of this tea, it just may be your tea too!
